Are you interested in joining us? We are always keen to attract new members (aged 18 and over)! We don't hold auditions - instead we invite you to come along and decide with us whether you are comfortable with the required standard. As a guide, we would normally expect players to be comfortable playing Grade 8 repertoire.Membership costs £130 per season, with reduced rates for students and retired members. We expect all members to commit to our concerts and help with marketing and publicity.
The orchestra rehearses in South Belfast on Tuesday evenings from September to May each season. We encourage regular attendance and ask members to make the effort to be ready to play at the rehearsal start time of 7.30 pm. Rehearsals normally run until approximately 9.30 pm, with a break for a cup of tea!
There are normally 6 or 7 rehearsals to prepare for each concert. The final rehearsal will normally be on the afternoon of the day of the concert, at the concert venue. This allows the stage and seating to be arranged, and also gives the orchestra the opportunity to adjust to the accoustic.

Opportunities to join are dependent on the current makeup and needs of the orchestra. All applications will be carefully reviewed and retained on file and, if a vacancy arises in your section, you will be contacted by a member of the SSO committee and invited to come along to a Tuesday evening rehearsal.
